John Cavanaugh: Trump's corruption is on a scale the country has never seen before
Published in the Omaha World-Herald.
In just over a year since taking office, new reports estimate that President Donald Trump and his family have personally made billions off his presidency. It is corruption on a scale our country has never seen before.
Trump has made millions licensing his name on golf courses, hotels and other projects around the globe.
And at the same time, he’s imposing different tariffs on different countries. In Vietnam, the Trump organization is trying to build a multimillion-dollar golf resort. The project required approval from the Vietnamese government. Originally Trump had proposed a 46% tariff on Vietnam. But after the government fast-tracked approval of the project, Trump lowered the tariff on Vietnam to 20%.
Over the summer, he accepted a luxury jet from Qatar valued at $400 million. Tech and media companies have paid Trump more than $90 million in settlements since the last election.
But even this isn’t enough for Trump. Now, he is suing the IRS for $10 billion. If he wins, he will be taking $10 billion in taxpayer dollars and putting it directly into his own bank account.
Trump and his family are getting wealthier and wealthier while he and Congress have passed legislation that is causing healthcare premiums to double for the average Nebraska family that buys Marketplace coverage.
Trump’s corruption has consequences — it's adding to the affordability crisis. His greed and corruption mean that he’ll happily let corporations and other countries do as they please if it means they’ll pay up. Trump doesn’t care that his tariffs mean families pay more for groceries, electronics, and even housing.
We need Congress to stop Trump and hold him accountable, but corruption in Washington doesn't end with Trump. Fixing a broken system will take leaders who have the courage and proven leadership to stand up to Trump and the billionaires and corporate interests who surround him.
In Congress, I will fight to ban members of Congress from stock trading and fight for laws that prevent ANY president from profiting off of the presidency like this. I’m refusing corporate PAC money and promising not to trade any stock while in office. It’s time to elect leaders who put their constituents ahead of their own interests every single day.
